The proposal to ban research into using modified human cells has been pushed to the sidelines by a State Senate that thinks it goes too far. For Jon Dolan of Lake St. Louis, the bill goes where the Legislature has never gone before – establishing an undefined definition of life. Columbia Senator Chuck Graham says many of those supporting the bill have been misleading people about what it means. Backers say modified cells in a petri dish are human, or have the potential to be human. Opponents say those cells will never develop as human if they’re never implanted in a womb.
