The former auxiliary bishop for the St. Louis Archdiocese has been named the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belleville, Illinois. just across the river from St. Louis. Bishop Edward Braxton will preside over 28 southern Illinois counties. Braxton served as auxiliary bishop of St. Louis from 1995 to 2000 before becoming bishop of the Lake Charles Diocese in Louisiana.
