On CBS’ “60 Minutes” former big league slugger Jose Canseco claims that he helped former Oakland A’s teammate and former Cardinal Mark McGwire to take steroids. On the program Canseco said, “I injected him (McGwire) probably twice.” But interviewer Mike Wallace pointed out in the interview that in Canseco’s statement differs from what he wrote in his book, which comes out today. In the book that Canseco claims to have injected McGwire “often”. Cardinals’ manager Tony LaRussa, who managed both players in Oakland and McGwire in St. Louis appeared on the program as well and thinks Canseco is lying. He told Wallace that Canseco’s claims are just sour grapes, “I think (Canseco is) in dire straights and needs money. I think secondly, I think it’s a healthy case of envy and jealousy.” McGwire has denied the charges. In 1998 McGwire admitted to taking a supplement called Androstenedione, which was legal in Major League Baseball at the time but has since been banned.
