The State Mental Health Department is touting the success of a program that improves services to those with mental illnesses, while saving Medicaid dollars. The Missouri Mental Health Medicaid Pharmacy Partnership Program evaluates Medicaid mental health prescribing practices. Doctor Joseph Parks, Medical Director of the State Mental Health Department, says the focus is only on certain Medicaid patients – those receiving multiple prescriptions from multiple physicians. Doctor Parks says the Department analyzes prescription information to keep track of patterns of care, which include those duplications in the prescribing of medication by different doctors. He insists this is not an attempt to target doctors. The Program has been in effect for a year-and-a-half. The Department claims the Program saves the State an estimated $7.7-Million annually.
