The new Sheriff of Cole County appears to have taken his own life. The State Highway Patrol is investigating the death of Sheriff George Brooks, who was found dead in his home. It appears he shot himself. Brooks had been Sheriff since November when he was appointed to fill the last couple of months of the term of his predecessor, who retired. He was elected to a full four-year term last fall.
