Governor Matt Blunt has a big advantage over the last two Republicans to serve as Governor: a Legislature firmly in control of his own party. Senator Kit Bond says the inauguration of Blunt reminded him of his first inauguration. The last Republican Governor to serve was US Attorney General John Ashcroft. He’s impressed with the new Governor. Other Republicans say such a shift of power to their party seem nearly impossible just a few years ago.
