He went west as a young boy to live with his grandparents in a sod house on the Upper Soloman River, near Stockton, in Western Kansas. He was eight years old when he moved to Kansas City and first saw the Missouri River. It was at flood stage.The big river would be a part of his life for the next 84 years. He would come to call it “The River of an Unwritten Epic.” His name was John G. Neihardt.
