Outgoing DNR Chief Wonders How Missouri Will Pay For Water Clean-Up

December 29, 2004 By admin Leave a Comment

The State of Missouri has been told to clean up its waters or the federal government will. It’s the way the state has settled a lawsuit that accused it of ignoring federal clean water standards for years. Natural Resources Department Director Steve Mahfood says the agreement is going to cost hundreds of millions of dollars to implement. He does not know how the state is going to be able to write the new rules, then afford to implement them. The state has 16 months to draft the new regulations, or the Environmental Protection Agency will write the regs. Mahfood says the agreement could be one of the biggest issues facing the Blunt Adminsitration.
