A leading state lawmaker would like to see the school districts which have brought suit against the state to drop their legal action and wait for the Legislature to address their concerns about the school funding formula. Senator Charlie Shields of St. Joseph chairs the Joint Interim Committee on Education that will become permanent during the session next year. He says committee members are working hard to address concerns about the formula. A circuit judge has stated he will stop the legal proceedings by the school districts and allow the Legislature to address the issue if the Attorney General will agree the current formula is constitutionally inadequate. A spokesman for the AG has said he won’t agree to the judge’s conditions.
