Mayor, Governor, William Carr Lane

December 1, 2004 By admin Leave a Comment

He was appointed the governor of New Mexico by President Millard Fillmore in 1852 and journeyed from St. Louis to Santa Fe to take up the reigns of government. But when he got there he found little government to run. On top of that, the military commander of New Mexico didn’t want to see a civil governor assume power so he refused all support. He and Lane almost fought a duel over the matter but eventually became good friends.
