The State Health Department is encouraging low-income women to take advantage of a program that offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings. The Show Me Healthy Women program is in its twelfth year, providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings to women who meet certain criteria. Women must reside in Missouri, must be of a certain age – depending on the test required, and must have a limited income. Debi Becker with the State Health Department’s Cancer Control Unit says any woman meeting the qualifications is eligible for annual screening. It’s important for women who reach a certain age to be screened on an annual basis. Women who qualify must have a household income of no more than twice the federal poverty income guideline – that’s $18,620 a year for a woman living alone and increases by $6,280 for each additional family member.
