A visiting professor of pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has been awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Doctor Aaron Ciechanover has been a visiting professor at the university since 1987. Doctor Alan Schwartz, a professor of pediatrics at Washington University, has worked with the Nobel Prize winner for some time. He spoke with Doctor Ciechanover earlier in the day, saying the Noble Prize winner had no inkling that his work would be honored. Ciechanover and two others share the award for their groundbreaking discovery of a process that cells utilize to eliminate unwanted proteins. Doctor Chechanover, who is now lecturing at a university in Israel, says he considers Washington University his second home.
