A high-tech tunnel the Missouri Department of Transportation says is unlike any other tunnel in the United States opens today in St. Louis near Lambert Airport. The tunnel runs under what will become Lambert’s newest runway. It is strong, built to easily support a typical Boeing 747 landing on top of it. It also is designed to resist earthquake, even bombing. And it incorporates technology to provide drivers with the most up-to-date information about traffic flow and the like. As one spokesman says, it incorporates convenience and safety features unknown to most other tunnels.
