Wizards Win U.S. Open Cup

September 23, 2004 By admin Leave a Comment

The Kansas City Wizards beat the Chicago Fire 1-0 to win the US Open Cup at Arrowhead Stadium Wednesday night. Igor Simutenkov’s free kick five minutes into overtime gave the Wizards the trophy. The tournament’s official name is the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, named after the Wizards—and Kansas City Chiefs owner. The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer tournament in the United States, dating back to 1914. It’s open to both pro and amateur teams.
