State Education Commissioner Kent King has recommended the Kansas City School District halt further payments to state aid to the Westport Community Secondary Academy.King says payments should be halted until it can be determined what funds the charter schools might be entitled to receive. King says the State Supreme Court ruling ends the legal fight, clearing the way for the Kansas City School District to operate the schools this school year. The Supreme Court declined to rule in the dispute between the school district and the charter schools, allowing an appeals court ruling against the charter schools to stand. State law calls on the Education Department to send state aid for charter schools to the local school district, which passes along the payment.
