Attorney General Jay Nixon accuses a funeral home in far north-central Missouri of collecting on pre-paid funeral policies by falsely reporting deaths. A civil suit has been filed against Roger Newman, the owner of Newman Funeral Home in Unionville, and a court order has been issued to prevent the funeral home from selling any more pre-paid funeral contracts. Under such arrangements, a funeral home uses the client’s money to take out an insurance policy to be cashed in upon the death of the client. Nixon accuses Newman of cashing in before the death. In fact, Nixon claims Newman has filed at least 30 false death claims totaling more than $300,000.
