Jimmy Gobble pitched into the seventh inning as the Royals topped the Tigers 8-1 Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium. Gobble was able to hold Detroit to just four hits and three walks to get his fourth win of the season. His teammates didn’t make things easy for him early on, giving him just a 2-1 lead to work with through the first five innings. Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Royals the lead. Pudge Rodriguez made it 2-1 with an RBI double in the third inning and it stayed 2-1 until the sixth when Angel Berroa drove in a run with a single. In the seventh Ken Harvey and Joe Randa drove in runs to make it 5-1. Nate Field relieved Gobble with one out in the seventh and finished the game for his second save of the season. Mike Sweeney gave Field some breathing room by providing a three-run homer in the eighth inning…. The top two hitters in the A.L. batting race went at it and both went 1-4. Ken Harvey’s average dropped to .351 and Pudge Rodriguez fell to .360.
