Melvin Watkins was hired as Mizzou’s newest assistant basketball coach yesterday. Watkins resigned as Texas A and M’s head coach after losing to Mizzou at the Big 12 tourney in March. Watkins’ tenure at College Station began in 1998, where he compiled a record of 60-111. His final season resulted in a winless conference record in 2003-2004. Before his time at Texas A and M, Watkins was the head coach at UNC-Charlotte. The search for a new assistant began in May, when Lane Odom resigned the same day the University released the NCAA’s findings of their investigation into the program. Last week, associate head coach Tony Harvey resigned. He’s accused of giving former Tiger Ricky Clemons $250. A second assistant will eventually be hired.
