Matt Clement held the Cardinals in check to get his seventh win as St. Louis fell to Chicago 7-3 at Wrigley. He allowed three runs off five hits in eight innings of work. Scott Rolen hit his 15th and 16th home runs with solo shots in the second and fourth innings—he has 62 RBI’s. In the eighth inning Cardinal outfielder Roger Cedeno broke his bat after an appeal to the first base umpire turned a ball into a swinging strike. Cedeno was ejected and allegedly spit on home plate umpire Rick Reed. Reed said, “He definitely meant to spray and he did, whatever he had in his mouth…..I needed a windshield wiper after he was done.” Reed said he plans on reporting the incident to Major League Baseball. Cardinal starter Woody Williams allowed 12 hits over five innings and was charged with six runs.
