Planning is about to begin for a new license plate design. The last time Missouri changed its license plate design was 1997. But the company that makes the reflective materials for those plates say the stuff wears out in about ten years. The Legislature has sent Governor Bob Holden a bill that sets up a system to redesign and re-issue license plates at the start of 2007. The design work will be done by a committee housed in the Revenue Department. Department Director Carol Russell Fischer says it could mean new looks for many of the 150 to 200 different kinds of plates the state issues. The bill requires the committee to hold three public hearings. It’ll be up to the committee to decide if there will be a design contest – there was one seven years ago. Regardles of the process, she says, our license plates probably will have a different look in less than three years.
