For the second straight day, the Royals lost to the A’s in extra innings, dropping a 3-2 decision in ten innings. Kansas City was in a 2-0 hole when Oakland scored twice in the second inning thanks to a Dennys Reyes throwing error, which plated Jermaine Dye and a fielder’s choice by Eric Karros. Mike Sweeney’s homer in the fourth got the Royals on the board and an RBI double from Angel Berroa in the fifth tied it up. In the 10th, Eric Byrnes singled off Nate Field for the game-winning hit—Field got the loss and dropped to 2-1 on the season. The Royals have lost all six games they’ve played against the A’s in 2004 and have lost 10 straight to Oakland dating back to last season.
