The Cubs may have won the battle in the home run department. Chicago hit four home runs on Friday, St. Louis hit just two. But the Cardinals came out on top where it mattered the most. The Redbirds outscored the Cubs 7-6 to win the series opener. Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth. Michael Barrett smacked two homers for Chicago. Moises Alou hit a three-run shot for the Cubs. Chris Carpenter improved his record to 5-1 with the win.
