Holden Wants Same-Sex Marriage Ban on August Ballot

May 20, 2004 By admin Leave a Comment

Governor Holden has called an August election on the proposed amendment banning same-sex marriages. But Republican lawmakers and Secretay of State Matt Blunt, also a Republican, say he cannot do that. A judge might decide who’s right. Republicans, who want the issue on the ballot in November, say Holden cannot set an election date until after legislative leaders sign the resolution and they do not plan to do that until next week, after the deadline for putting the issue on the August ballot. Holden’s office says the constitution gives him the power to set an election date anytime after the legislature passes the measure.
