The effort to make Northwest Missouri State University a part of the University of Missouri System runs into a snag in the Senate. Both the University of Missouri and Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville have agreed to have Northwest become the fifth school in the University of Missouri System. But the plan first has to get the approval of lawmakers. Senator Norma Champion of Springfield has forced the bill onto the shelf by threatening to filibuster unless her wish to change the name of Southwest Missouri State University to Missouri State is attached to the bill. Senator Charlie Shields of St. Joseph sponsors the bill, which also includes a number of other name changes for regional colleges. He doesn’t like the game that’s being played and says it might kill everything. The bill, as it now stands, would make other name changes, including one to change Western Missouri State College in St. Joseph to Missouri Western State University. The bill is in limbo until some kind of agreement can be worked out.
