The Cardinals 2004 season begins by hosting the Brewers. Matt Morris will try to improve on his 11-8 2003 campaign with a start this afternoon against Ben Sheets. For the first time in a long time, the Cardinals aren’t considered one of the top two teams in the N.L. Central. That distinction belongs to the Cubs and Astros. The question will be pitching. While Chicago and Houston are locked in as two of the best in that department, the Redbirds have some question marks. Chris Carpenter will try to return from Tommy John surgery, Jason Marquis tries to live up to early expecations he had in Atlanta and Jeff Suppan tries to shore up the bottom of the rotation. A special guest will be at Busch Stadium this afternoon as President Busch throws out the first pitch. It’s the first time a president has ever done that for a Cardinal home opener.
