A 17-member committee has been appointed to decide if Southeast Missouri State University should change the names and mascots of its sports teams. It’s hoped the committee can make recommendations to the school president by June. The final decision will be made by the board of regents. Southeast Missouri State’s men’s teams are called the “Indians.” The women’s teams are the “Otahkians,” named for an Indian woman who died near Cape Girardeau during the Cherokee march on the Trail of Tears.
