Norm Stewart Court will live on. In a surprising move Sunday, MU Chancellor Richard Wallace announced that the new arena, which will open in October, will also feature a court named after the former Mizzou coach. After Bill and Nancy Laurie donated $25-million to build the new arena, they wanted no part of it to be named after any former player or coach. Many believe that decision stemmed from a stormy relationship between Stewart and Laurie. But on Sunday, Stewart and the rest of the 13,611 in attendance learned of the decision for the first time. His wife Virginia put her hands to her face and Stewart’s eye’s welled up briefly. The arena opened in 1972 and the Tigers went 405-72 there.
