A fix for St. Louis County might create a bunch of problems elsewhere. An uproar arose in St. Louis County a few years back when the County Assessor admitted some big hikes in property taxes were made after an employee of the office merely drove by the property to re-assess it. The Legislature acted to stop such drive-by assessments, but the statewide nature of the fix hasn’t been as welcomed elsewhere. Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren represents the Association of County Clerks before the House Tax Policy Committee. She supports a bill sponsored by ChairmanShannon Cooper of Clinton that would not require the other counties to participate in the St. Louis County fix. County officials say the cost of compliance would be a tremendous strain on their tight budgets, and they argue they shouldn’t be forced into a solution for a problem they don’t have.
