State Senators are debating a change to how Missouri picks its transportation directors. Right now, Highway Commissioners appointed by the Governor decide whowill run the Department. Senator Matt Bartle of Lee’s Summit tells the Transportation Committee he wants to change that process by sending to the voters a proposal thathas the Governor appointing the Director. But Senator John Russell of Lebanon questions whether Bartle’s legislation would just make the Director’s position more political.Russell admits he is truly in the minority at this point with his Republican colleagues and Democrats including the Governor calling for the change.
