The United States Supreme Court is considering whether the state can keep cities from offering telecommunications services. The Legislature passed the law seven years ago, one year after Congress passed the federal Telecommunications Act that was designed to foster competition in phone service. One part of the federal law prohibits states from prohibiting any entity from offering telecommunications services. The cities of Columbia, Springfield, and Sikeston want to expand their city fiberoptic networks to provide service to private cusomters.
