A new legislative session begins today, but issues from last year’s sessions overshadow it. Republicans took over control of the State Legislature last year for the first time in 50 years, disrupting the plans of Governor Bob Holden, a Democrat. The two sides clashed over numerous issues, with their disagreements on the budget forcing a special session that barely concluded in time for new fiscal year to begin. Harshly partisan talk punctuated House debate, at least until Republican leadership used parliamentary maneuvers to shut off debate and shut up Democrats – a tactic House Speaker Catherine Hanaway says might be used again this year. Despite the high-profile clashes between Republicans and Democrats in the House Chamber and between Republican legislative leaders and the Democrat in the Governor’s office, Hanaway looks back in pride on last year and its accomplishments. The legislative session begins 12:00 noon today.
