Health care officials at the University of Missouri-Columbia’s St. Clair School of Nursing are trying to raise awareness about lymphedema, a medical condition thatresults in the swelling of hands, arms, and even the chest walls of people who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery. The School’s Jane Armer says conditions such as lymphedema are often overlooked because so much attention has been paid to survival, but that’s starting to change.Armer says there are treatments that can prevent lymphedema or limit the damage and the pain if the condition has set in.
