An effort to place a sales tax proposal on next August’s ballot has been abandoned due to a lack of public support and campaign cash. The petition would have asked voters to approve a temporary state sales tax increase during tough economic times to fund education. But backers of the idea say their proposal appears to lack the necessary support among voters. The Secretary of State’s office had approved the proposal for petition circulation. Supporters say they now won’t even bother to gather signatures.
