One of Missouri’s most respected judges has died at the age of 88. Senior US District Judge Elmo Hunter was on the bench for 38 years. Among his best-known rulings – one that the National Organization for Women could organize economic boycotts in states that had not passed the Equal Rights Amendment. He also issued orders telling the State Corrections Department to reduce overcrowding in prisons and improve health care. He also ruled patients at the Fulton state mental hospital had a right to treatment to improve their mental condition.
