It took two overtimes, but when the dust finally settled in Kansas City, SMS topped UMKC 80-77. Double overtime was probably the last thing on the Bears’ minds when they entered the half with a 35-23 lead. But UMKC battled back and Michael Watson hit a three pointer late in the second half to send it to overtime with a 62-62 tie. Watson led the ‘Roos with 29 points. Nothing was settled after the first extra period as both team scored seven points apiece. The lead changed seven times in the second overtime, but the Bears took the final lead with 26 seconds to go when junior Eric Smith hit a shot to put SMS on top for good. He played the final minute of the game, after SMS fouled four players out. After the game, Hinson said he’s never had four players foul out, adding, “I really thought we were going to have to suit up our manager for a little bit.” SMS improved to 6-4, snapping a two game skid. UMKC fell to 3-5, losing their second straight.
