House Speaker Catherine Hanaway has announced she will run for Secretary of State next year. Hanaway says she would like to concentrate on two very important and very different jobs within the office: chief elections official and chief securities regulator. Hanaway says the state’s election system still needs reform. Hanaway says she wants the office to be more aggressive in creating jobs and believes the securities division can be an avenue to do that. Hanaway has been Speaker since earlier this year when Republicans took control of the House for the first time in 54 years. She would be able to run for State Representative for one more term, then would have to leave the House due to term limits. Current Secretary of State Matt Blunt is expected to announce a run for Governor.
