Images of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in custody bring joy to America’s fighting men and women and to Missouri’s members of Congress. West-central Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, looks forward to a trial by Iraqis. He says they suffered the most at the hands of Saddam, so they should have the opportunity to bring him to justice. Senator Jim Talent, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says this is a big step on the road to bringing Americans home from Iraq. He says it will hasten the creation of a permanent Iraqi government. That, he says, will allow for the return home of many American troops. Senator Christopher Bond says this achievement goes well beyond the borders of Iraq. He says it will send a message to all troublemakers in that part of the world. Southwest Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt, the House Majority Whip, says Saddam’s capture sends a clear signal to his remaining loyalists that the U.S. is in this to win.
