The Royals signed free agent outfielder Matt Stairs and reliever Scott Sullivan Tuesday. Stairs hit .292 with 20 homers and 57 RBI’s with the Pirates last season. After starting his career in Oakland, he’s bounced around playing for four teams over the last four seasons. The Royals will be his fifth. He’ll help fill a void in the outfield, created by Raul Ibanez who signed with the Mariners and Michael Tucker who signed with the Giants. Sullivan, who pitched at least 100 innings per season from 1998-2001, had a 6-0 record and an ERA of 3.66 coming out of the Reds and White Sox bullpen in 2003. The Royals are apparently close to signing free agent catcher Benito Santiago.
