The Cardinals tried to solidify their bench yesterday by signing free agent infielder Brent Butler and first baseman Steve Cox. Butler was originally drafted by the Cards, in 1996 but ended up in the Rockies organization. He has yet to play an entire season in the big leagues. He played 37 games with the Rockies in 2003 and 54 games with Triple A Colorado Springs. He hit .332 in the minors last season. Cox was the Devil Rays starting first baseman in 2002, hitting .254 with 16 homers and 72 RBI’s, but played in Japan last season.
