The Royals have re-signed middle reliever Jason Grimsley. He had 76 appearances last season and compiled a record of 2-6 with two saves and a 5.16 ERA. Grimsley has at least 70 appearances in each of the last three seasons. He’s played for five teams in his 12-year career. 2004 will mark his fourth season with the Royals, which will his longest stint with any team. The Royals couldn’t come to terms with catcher Brent Mayne, but they’ll try to replace him with free agent catcher Benito Santiago. Outfielder Michael Tucker has signed with the Giants, but the Royals will be compensated with San Francisco’s first round selection in the 2004 draft. The front office is trying to fill an outfield void left by Tucker by trying to sign veteran Matt Stairs.
