Legislation to prevent the deduction of fees from state workers who do not wish to join unions will be filed and taken up during the coming session of the General Assembly. Senate Leader Peter Kinder of Cape Girardeau says a bill to prevent these forced deductions was initially filed earlier this year, but it did not clear all the hurdles. So, another attempt will be made. These deductions have not yet taken effect. Supporters of the idea say deductions from workers not wishing to join the union are being called “service fees,” rather than union dues. Kinder and others claim this is playing with words.
