Cardinal centerfielder Jim Edmonds said he felt pain once he began his off-season workouts. That pain lead to shoulder surgery, which he underwent yesterday in St. Louis. Doctors say its minor and they expect him to be fine by spring training, but he will have to take it easy for the next six weeks. Yesterday Edmonds was named the Major League’s top defensive player for 2003 in an on-line vote on Major League Baseball’s website. Last month he earned the sixth Gold Glove of his career. The Cardinals have decided to keep back up catcher Chris Widger, signing him to a one-year contract.
