Supreme Court Hears Dispute Over School Funding

December 4, 2003 By admin Leave a Comment

A dispute over the power of the Governor to withhold education funding is now before the State Supreme Court. Attorney Michael Delaney represents the 14 school districts suing Governor Holden, stating the state constitution prohibits him from withholding $190-Million from public schools. Disagreeing is Holden’s Chief Counsel, David Cosgrove, who says the Legislature forced the Governor to sign a budget he didn’t like or shut down state government. Cosgrove adds a ruling in favor of the school districts would tip the balance of power drastically toward the Legislature.
