The St. Louis Cardinals have re-signed pitcher Chris Carpenter to a one-year deal with an option for a second year. Carpenter hasn’t appeared in a major league game since 2002. He made eight rehab appearances last season while recovering from shoulder surgery. A follow-up operation to remove scar tissue from the shoulder ended his season in late July. Carpenter will earn a base salary of $500,000, which could reach close to $1 million with incentives. Carpenter is 49-50 with a 4.83 ERA in 152 career games.
