A Kansas man has been convicted in federal court of kidnapping, raping and killing a Missouri teenager. The only question remaining is whether Wesley Purkey will be sent to prison for life in accordance with his stated wishes or be put to death. The jury in the federal trial deliberated for two-and-a-half hours before returning the guilty verdict against Purkey in the death of 16-year-old Jennifer Long in January of 1998. Purkey admitted in court that he raped Long, stabbed her to death, then dismembered her body, burning it bit-by-bit in his fireplace. Purkey had confessed to the grisly killing in an effort to escape state prison and serve time in the federal system, which he considers the better of the two. He later recanted when it appeared federal authorities were not willing to go along with his plan and, instead, would seek to put him to death.
