A St. Louis doctor has returned from the annual scientific meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a meeting with featured a lot of talk by doctors saying they’re being targeted by trial attorneys. DoctorWilliam Huffaker says plastic surgeons in twelve states are experiencing what he calls a full-blown liability crisis, while Missouri is one of thirty other states on the verge of a serious dilemma. He says premiums are going through the roof, but that’s not the worst of it. He says many insurers are no longer selling policies to physicians. He and other Missouri plastic surgeons are joining with doctors from around the state to call on Governor Bob Holden and state lawmakers to approve litigation reform. A tort reform bill passed by the Legislature was vetoed by the Governor. Doctor Huffaker says when insurance companies pull out of a state it’s not being done becausethey’re making lots of money it’s because they’re losing money.
