Saint Louis University has relented and will allow students to hang the flag outside their on-campus apartments. The issue came to a head when two students were told to take down the American flag they had been hanging from their balcony since shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Business majors Nicholas Payne and Tom Lundeen protested, eventually writing members of Congress. Displaying the flag had been prohibited by a four-year-old school policy that prohibited anything from being hung from balconies and threatened fines and confication for those who violated the policy. The policy will be changed to exempt the American flag. Payne says he’s glad he and Lundeen won the battle, but added it’s a battle the school never should have fought.
