The Cardinals made it official yesterday. Fernando Vina won’t be back after the team declined their option. The Cardinals will give Vina $1,000,000 to void the rest of his contract. In four seasons in St. Louis, Vina hit .285 and won Gold Gloves in 2001 and 2002. He played just 61 games in 2003 as he battled a hamstring injury all season. The Cardinals also declined their options on pitchers Jeff Fassero and Chris Carpenter. Fassero was 1-7 with an ERA of 5.68, working mostly out of the bullpen. Carpenter was signed last off-season from Toronto, while he recovered from elbow surgery, which ended his season in 2002. He never pitched for St. Louis.
