Biotechnology and agriculture chemical company Monsanto, based in St. Louis, says it is forced to cut 1,200 jobs worlwide, 200 jobs in St. Louis alone, because of a larger-than-expected fourth quarter loss. The company says it lost $188-Million in the quarter, or 72 cents a share. It links the loss to a settlement it had to pay involving harmful PCBs in Anniston, Alabama.
