St. Louis native and former Southwest Missouri State baseball star Bill Mueller was able to edge out Red Sox teammate Manny Ramirez to win the American League batting title. Mueller finished with a .326 average and Ramirez hit .325. It’s the lowest batting average to win the A.L. crown since Rod Carew did it with a .318 mark in 1972. Mueller played at SMS from 1990-1993.
